Bosch was thus wealthy enough not to have to paint to make a living, which sets him apart from the majority of painters from this period (most of the artists you've heard of from the early modern era worked to make a living). According to tax records from 1502-3 and 1511-12, Bosch was in the top 10% of ’s Hertogenbosch citizens.
So, Hieronymus Bosch (whose name in fact was Jeroen van Aken) was born supposedly in 1453 in the Flemish city of 's-Hertogenbosch, into the family of a painter Anthonius van Aken. His grandfather was a painter , as well as his uncles , and even his mother was a daughter of a wood carver , so there was no hope for the boy to choose a different Hieronymus Bosch was an early Flemish painter known for his inventive and surreal religious-themed paintings. One of his most famous works, The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1490–1510), consists of a triptych depicting both Eden and hell populated with uniquely imaginative monsters and scenes of torture. The wood on which the panel has been painted with a limited, yet rich selection of colours, including lead-tin yellow, red lake and lead white, has been dated to around 1491.
